Music and Our Inspirations
One of the most important details in a game after the gameplay is the music and sound effects. Music will either make or break the immersion and the game as a whole. We were mostly inspired by Central America and South America, where the game is taking place. We were first looking into more traditional tropical music that you would find out in the streets if you were to go to a tropical city. We also wanted to get a fun, cartoon vibe to the soundtrack and match our visuals to the game. This pushed us in the direction of Hanna-Barbera.
First Track
Without music a game would feel empty and boring so we needed to create a track that would capture our visions. Knowing that we needed to have a lighthearted and playful-sounding song we got to work, creating our first piece. We first came up with a short track that started in the right direction but did not fully capture what we were looking for in our soundtrack. This was, however, a big step in the right direction.
Collaboration with Berklee College of Music
After our first Stout Game Expo experience we started collaborating with the Berklee College of Music to go more into detail with our music and to give it a professional feel. With this, our sound effects and our main game track grew significantly in detail and complexity. We first received some sound effects to place in the game and they sounded very similar to some of the sound effects you would find from Hanna-Barbera. A week or two later we received the main track, and we were all blown away. After we listened to it, we all could see this track playing in our final version of our game. The sound effects that we got were fun to implement. We discussed having each of the teams get their own dedicated instrument. With that we wanted to make the winning team louder to emphasize to the players who currently is in first. While talking with our Berklee collaborators we decided that this would be a little too far outside of our scope for the game.
SGX Ready
After this conversation we really started getting everything put into place and the team truly felt like the game was being finalized. We hope you can splash your way into SGX this year and hear the audio take life in our game Grape Juice City.
